Torremolinos is often regarded as Spain’s first mass tourism experiment, a place where the Costa del Sol learned how to sell sun and sea to the world. While that part of the story is true, it leaves out the town’s most defining chapter. Long before Spain became a global reference point for LGBTQ rights, Torremolinos was quietly making space for people to live, meet, and exist as themselves. Behind unmarked doors and inside discreet bars, the country’s first openly queer social spaces took shape, laying the groundwork for a movement that did not yet have a name. Long before the language of rights existed, this town was already pushing the limits.

Much of the Torremolinos coastline now exists in a bubble, built around international crowds who could be anywhere in southern Europe and barely notice the difference. The coast still draws the crowds, but the more interesting and authentic parts of town sit just around the corner.

If you step away from the seaside buzz and head inland, quiet neighborhoods, shaded parks, and viewpoints like Cañada del Lobo reveal a Costa del Sol that most tourists never see. Push further towards the whitewashed villages of Alhaurín de la Torre and Benalmádena, and you’ll leave the crowded shores behind, discovering a side of the region that feels completely different.

Beyond the beaches, Torremolinos knows how to throw a party. Pride paints the streets with music and color, while the Romería and Feria de San Miguel show that tradition here isn’t stuck in the past. With festivals happening year-round, there’s always a reason to wander, celebrate, and see the town beyond the shoreline.
